How anycast works

One address, announced everywhere

Every Edge location announces the same nameserver addresses over BGP. Routers pick the shortest path, so a query from Manchester lands in London and one from Osaka stays in Osaka. There is nothing to configure.
  • No geo-DNS guesswork: the network routes it
  • If a location goes offline, routes shift to the next nearest
  • Attack traffic is spread across every PoP, not focused on one
  1. 01

    A user makes a query

Their resolver asks your Edge nameserver for app.example.com.
  2. 02

    The nearest PoP receives it

BGP delivers the packet to the closest Edge location announcing that address.
  3. 03

    Answered from memory

The PoP replies from its in-memory copy of your zone, typically in milliseconds.
