For WordPress

WordPress hosting without the visit caps

A real VM running Nginx, PHP-FPM and MySQL, uploads in an S3-compatible bucket and guest pages cached in 988 locations. Managed-host speed for a fraction of the bill.

Free to sign up. No egress fees on any product.

Why WordPress on Edge

The managed-WordPress promise, actually delivered

Real CPU, a media library that outlives the server and a CDN that takes the traffic. All for less than a managed plan.
  • A real VM, not a shared box

    Dedicated vCPU and NVMe storage behind a global CDN. No noisy neighbours slowing wp-admin at the worst moment.
  • An S3 media library

    WP Offload Media moves wp-content/uploads into Edge Storage. Media survives any VM restore and scales to terabytes.
  • Image optimisation built in

    The CDN resizes, crops and converts to AVIF or WebP from the URL. Uninstall the heavy optimisation plugins.
  • CDN and SSL in front

    Guest pages and media cache in 988 locations with automatic SSL. Traffic spikes land on the edge, not on PHP.
  • Bills you can predict

    No metered visits, no per-GB egress and no burst surcharges. A VM, a CDN deployment and a bucket, priced up front.
  • MySQL on the same box

    The database sits next to PHP for low-latency queries. Move it to its own VM the day you need to, with a dump and a restore.

Reference architecture

How WordPress maps to Edge

A standard LEMP stack on one VM, uploads offloaded to object storage and the CDN out front. Boring on purpose.
  • Compute

    Runs WordPress, Nginx, PHP-FPM and MySQL on one VM.

  • Storage

    Holds wp-content/uploads through WP Offload Media.

  • CDN

    Caches guest HTML, theme assets and every media URL.

  • Image optimisation

    Responsive AVIF and WebP variants, straight from the bucket.

  • DNS

    Anycast DNS for the apex, www and your email records.

  • Shield

    Scores comments, logins and registrations. No puzzle plugins.

  • Assist

    Answers visitor questions from your posts and pages.

Deploy

From a blank VM to a cached site in four steps

The wordpress library script does the LEMP install. You add media offload and the CDN.
  1. 01

    Create the VM and the media bucket

    The wordpress script installs Nginx, MySQL, PHP-FPM and WP-CLI on first boot. The admin password is generated if you leave it blank.

    shell
    $ edge compute create --name blog --size s-4vcpu-8gb \
        --image ubuntu-24 --region london --script wordpress \
        --script-param site_title="Acme Blog" \
        --script-param admin_email=me@acmeblog.com

    $ edge storage create acme-media
  2. 02

    Offload uploads to Edge Storage

    Install WP Offload Media (wp plugin install amazon-s3-and-cloudfront), then define its settings in code so they can't drift.

    wp-config.php
    define('AS3CF_SETTINGS', serialize([
      'provider'               => 'aws',
      'access-key-id'          => getenv('EDGE_KEY'),
      'secret-access-key'      => getenv('EDGE_SECRET'),
      'bucket'                 => 'acme-media',
      'region'                 => 'us-east-1',
      'copy-to-s3'             => true,
      'serve-from-s3'          => true,
      'delivery-provider'      => 'other',
      'enable-delivery-domain' => true,
      'delivery-domain'        => 'media.acmeblog.com',
    ]));
  3. 03

    Point the plugin at the Edge endpoint

    A tiny must-use plugin swaps the AWS endpoint for Edge Storage. Nothing else in WordPress changes.

    wp-content/mu-plugins/edge-storage.php
    <?php
    add_filter('as3cf_aws_s3_client_args', function ($args) {
      $args['endpoint'] = 'https://storage.edge.network';
      $args['use_path_style_endpoint'] = true;
      return $args;
    });
  4. 04

    Put the CDN in front

    One domain for pages, one for media with image transforms switched on. Purge after a theme deploy.

    shell
    $ edge cdn create --name acme-blog
    $ edge cdn domains add cdn-a1b2c3 \
        --domain acmeblog.com --origin https://<vm-ip>
    $ edge cdn domains add cdn-a1b2c3 \
        --domain media.acmeblog.com --jit-image \
        --origin-type storage --storage-bucket acme-media

    $ edge cdn purge cdn-a1b2c3 --path /wp-content/themes/*

What it costs

A busy WooCommerce site, itemised

Managed WordPress hosts price by visits and bandwidth. Here it's one VM, one CDN deployment and a bucket, and the image traffic is free.
  • No visit caps and no overage tiers
  • 250 GB of image bandwidth costs nothing
  • Image optimisation included with the CDN
  • Hourly billing with optional hard caps
See compute pricing

FAQ

WordPress on Edge, answered

Something else? Ask an engineer.
Will my plugins still work?
Yes. It's a standard LEMP stack, so anything that runs on a Linux VPS or a managed WordPress host runs here, WooCommerce included.
How does this compare to WP Engine or Kinsta?
Cheaper, with real CPU on a real VM, no visit caps, no egress fees and root access. The trade-off is that you look after the OS, or our Expert Services team does it for you.
How do I cache HTML?
Use a page-cache plugin such as W3 Total Cache or LiteSpeed Cache to produce static HTML, and let the CDN serve it to guests. Logged-in users and carts go to the origin as usual.
What about backups?
Take Compute snapshots of the VM and push nightly database dumps to an Edge Storage bucket. Your media already lives in storage, so a restore is quick.
How do I stop comment spam and login bots?
Add Edge Shield to your comment, login and registration forms. Real visitors never see a puzzle, every request gets a humanity score, and it works alongside any form plugin.
