The problem

Video is where CDN bills get out of hand

Bandwidth is the biggest line on a streaming bill, and on most CDNs it grows exactly as fast as your audience.
  1. 01

Every new viewer adds to the invoice

Egress is $0 in every region. A hit series costs the same to deliver as a quiet week.

  2. 02

    A premiere hammers the origin

The first request for each segment fills the edge cache. Everyone after is served from the nearest location.

  3. 03

Viewers far from your origin buffer

Segments are served from 988 locations, so start-up and bitrate switches don't wait on a long round trip.

  4. 04

Paid content gets shared and hotlinked

Token authentication, geo-blocking and password protection are part of the CDN, with no add-on to buy.

How it works

Built for the way video actually moves

HLS and DASH are just small files requested in sequence. The CDN is very good at small files requested in sequence.

Edge caching

Every segment, cached next to the viewer

Players fetch a playlist, pick a rendition and request short segments one after another. Edge caches each one at the location that served it, so a popular title is almost entirely served from the edge.
  • Media & Streaming preset with long TTLs for large files
  • Range requests for seeking in progressive MP4
  • HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 on every deployment
  • Purge a title globally when you re-encode it

Zero egress

Your biggest month costs the same as your quietest

On per-GB CDNs, 100 TB a month runs to thousands of dollars. On Edge, bandwidth is free. You pay for requests beyond the free tier, which for video segments comes to a few dollars.
  • No per-GB charges, in any region
  • Requests at $0.25 per million after 500k
  • Prepaid, with an optional monthly cap

Content protection

Keep premium content for paying viewers

Check access at the edge before a byte leaves the network. Require a token on premium paths, restrict playback to the regions you've licensed, and lock review builds behind a password.
  • Token authentication and geo-blocking on any path
  • Password protection for staging and review hostnames
  • Presigned, time-limited links for files in Edge Storage

Use cases

From one course to a full catalogue

  • VOD

    Video on demand

A back catalogue that plays instantly anywhere. Segments cache for as long as you like and re-encodes purge in seconds.

    /vod/** → ttl 1y
  • Courses

    Course platforms

Lessons for signed-in learners only, with free previews on a public path. Watch time grows, the bandwidth bill doesn't.

    /lessons/** → token auth
  • Archives

    Media archives

Keep the whole library in Edge Storage and serve it through the CDN. Old titles cost nothing to watch again.

  • Embeds

    Embedded video

Players in your site or app, from HLS and DASH to plain MP4 with seeking. Range requests and HTTP/3 are standard.

Monocle

How Monocle delivers premium content to 180+ countries

Monocle's readers and listeners expect instant access to high-resolution photography, audio and video. Performance used to vary across Asia and South America, breaking stories caused slowdowns, and egress made budgets hard to plan. Now content comes from the nearest of 988 locations, and a traffic spike costs the same as a quiet day.

FAQ

Before you move your library

Moving a large catalogue? We can run the migration.
Is egress really free for video?
Yes. Bandwidth is $0 at every scale and in every region. You pay $0.25 per million requests beyond the 500k included each month, and Storage for the library itself.
Do you transcode or package video?
Not as a managed service. Encode with your existing pipeline or run ffmpeg on an Edge VM, write the HLS or DASH output to Edge Storage, and the CDN delivers it.
Can I stop people sharing premium streams?
Require a token on premium paths, restrict playback to licensed regions with geo-blocking, and use presigned links for downloads from Storage. If you use a DRM provider, its encrypted segments are delivered like any other file.
How do I migrate from CloudFront or another CDN?
Create a deployment pointing at your current origin, test it on a staging hostname, then switch the DNS record. Nothing about your player or packaging has to change.

Grow your audience, not your bandwidth bill

Put your next release on the free tier with every CDN feature switched on. Egress stays at zero however far it travels.

Free to sign up. Nothing on Edge silently starts billing.
