The network

A cloud built by thousands of independent nodes

988 points of presence in 130+ countries. Super PoPs at the major exchanges, caches inside local ISPs, and community-run nodes in places traditional clouds don't reach. Every request is routed by live latency.

The same network runs CDN, Compute, Storage, DNS, Shield and Assist.

Architecture

Big pipes at the core, small nodes at the edge

Super PoPs sit at internet exchange points with direct Tier 1 peering and carry the bulk of traffic. Edge PoPs sit inside ISP networks, a few hops from your visitors. Community nodes fill the gaps in between.
  • Super PoPs: high-capacity nodes at the major exchanges
  • Edge PoPs: cache servers inside local ISP networks
  • Community nodes: independent operators in hard-to-reach places
“Our network is built with end-users in mind. It's a powerful mixture of strategically located PoPs, cache servers deployed directly inside ISP networks, and thousands of community-contributed edge nodes reaching places traditional clouds simply don't.”

Node operators

Spare capacity becomes part of the cloud

The network is run by the people who power it. Operators contribute bandwidth, compute and storage, stake XE, and earn rewards for the capacity and reliability they provide.

Host

Role 1 of 3

Processing and storage

Serves cached content, stores objects and runs workloads. Built for mixed hardware, and happy behind a home router.

15 Mbit/s or more
Quad-core 1.2 GHz
1 GB RAM
50 GB disk

Gateway

Role 2 of 3

Entry point and job routing

Aggregates the Hosts behind it, keeps a rolling performance score for each, and hands every job to the one most likely to finish it fastest.

250 Mbit/s or more
99% availability
64 GB RAM
1 TB SSD

Stargate

Role 3 of 3

Coordination and security

The masternodes. They run the XE blockchain, provide the naming system that makes resources addressable, and watch the network's health.

1 Gbit/s or more
99.9999% availability
128 GB RAM
2 TB SSD

How nodes join

From spare machine to serving traffic

  1. 01

    Pick a role

Most operators start as a Host. Gateways and Stargates need more bandwidth, hardware and availability.
  2. 02

    Stake XE

Operators stake XE to take part. Prefer not to run hardware? Backbone nodes are available for staking instead.
  3. 03

    Earn a score

Your Gateway keeps a rolling performance score. Faster, more reliable nodes are handed more of the work.
  4. 04

    Earn rewards

Rewards scale with the capacity and reliability you contribute, and with demand on the network.

Alongside community-run nodes, the Edge core team runs a backbone of Stargates, Gateways and Hosts with data-centre partners to guarantee baseline capacity. Tokens give access and participation rights. They are not investments, and rewards aren't guaranteed.

Routing and connectivity

Every packet takes the fastest healthy path

Tier 1 transit and private peering with local networks, steered by live latency measurements. When a route congests, traffic moves before your visitors notice.

Why distribute it

No single building can take you offline

  • Resilient by design

There's no single point of failure. If a PoP goes down, traffic reroutes around it automatically.
  • Close to everyone

Content and compute are served from the nearest location, for a median of <15ms worldwide.
  • Reach others skip

Nodes in regions traditional clouds underserve, so emerging markets get the same performance as the hubs.

Global coverage

Six regions, including the ones clouds skip

Deep coverage in the usual hubs and real presence in emerging markets, so a visitor in Lagos gets the same experience as one in London.
