Compute comparison
Edge vs DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean is one of the best developer clouds around. Edge takes a different approach to sizing and billing — here's where each one wins.
The honest answer
When DigitalOcean is the better choice
DigitalOcean has a mature product line, a huge library of tutorials and a large community. Droplets are simple to launch.
Choose DigitalOcean if…
- You rely on managed databases, App Platform or managed Kubernetes
- You value its extensive tutorials and community answers
- You need GPU instances today
- Your workload fits the smallest Droplet — it's cheaper than Edge at 1 vCPU / 1 GB

Sizing
When the workload doesn't match a Droplet, you pay for the difference
Fixed sizes bundle CPU, memory and disk together. A service that needs 4 GB of memory but only one core and a small disk still lands on a 2 vCPU, 80 GB Droplet. On Edge you set each resource on its own.
- Set vCPU, RAM and disk independently
- Resize one resource without jumping a whole tier
- Nothing idle on the bill
Monthly price for comparable VMs
| VM | Edge | DigitalOcean | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 vCPU / 1 GB / 25 GB | $6.64 | $6 | DigitalOcean $0.64 less |
| 1 vCPU / 2 GB / 50 GB | $10.36 | $12 | Edge $1.64 less |
| 2 vCPU / 4 GB / 80 GB | $19.24 | $24 | Edge $4.76 less |
| 4 vCPU / 8 GB / 160 GB | $38.47 | $48 | Edge $9.53 less |
| 8 vCPU / 16 GB / 320 GB | $76.94 | $96 | Edge $19.06 less |
Edge prices are calculated from our published per-resource rates. DigitalOcean prices are published list prices for Basic (shared CPU) Droplets at the time of writing; Edge vCPUs are dedicated cores. Check DigitalOcean's current pricing.
When to choose Edge
Where Edge makes more sense
You want to size VMs exactly
Droplets come in fixed tiers, so you often pay for RAM or disk you don't need. Edge prices each resource independently. You want a hard spending cap
Edge bills hourly from a prepaid balance. If it runs out, VMs stop and your data is retained — no runaway bills. You'd rather not hand over a card to try it
Edge signup is free with no card. Add credit when you're ready to deploy.
Migration
Moving from DigitalOcean
Follow the steps below yourself, or have our expert services team run the move with you.
- 01
Map what you run
List your Droplets and note what each one really uses — often less disk or fewer cores than its size includes. - 02
Recreate on Edge
Create matching VMs in the nearest region with the same OS image, SSH keys and a startup script for your stack. - 03
Sync and test
Copy data across while DigitalOcean keeps serving. Transfer into and out of Edge is free, so test as long as you need. - 04
Switch DNS
Point your records at the new VMs, watch traffic move, then shut the old instances down.
FAQ
Edge vs DigitalOcean, answered
Is Edge cheaper than DigitalOcean?
From 1 vCPU / 2 GB upwards, our comparable builds cost less at list price — and Edge's vCPUs are dedicated, while Basic Droplets are shared. At the very smallest size, 1 vCPU / 1 GB, DigitalOcean is cheaper ($6 vs $6.64).
Does Edge have managed databases or Kubernetes?
Not as managed products. You can run PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis or your own Kubernetes on Edge VMs — startup scripts install several in one step — but if you want those fully managed, DigitalOcean offers them.
What about bandwidth?
Droplets include a pooled transfer allowance and charge per GB beyond it. Edge doesn't meter egress at all.
